Open Talk - Pedestrian Tunnel Or Toilet

The pedestrian underpass at Flinders Station to the river not only looks like a public toilet, it is being used as one. Particularly on Saturday and Sunday mornings (after the late night holligans) the stench of urine is so bad it is sickening. I am sure it is also a health risk. Where are the council ?

Open Talk - Vic Roads Dangerous Transport In Southbank

Vic Roads force all Plackarded loads moving East on the freeway to go off at Power street and then onto City road. This includes chemicals, toxic waste, petrol tankers live animals. All are health risks and any accident will occur in the middle of a very high density residential area. Residents need to be aware and be scared ! This is not a question of if something might happen it is really a question of WHEN?

Open Talk - Health Risk In Southbank

Vic Roads bans all plackarded loads heading East to the Burnleigh Tunnel, divereting them down Power street and onto City Rd. This includes all dangerous goods, chemicals, petrol tankers and live animal transport (biohazard). The result is that residents in Southbank are forced to endure the noise and traffic problems of the large trucks and to be exposed to a massive increase in danger resulting from spills or accidents. Given that Southbank is a very high density housing area and continues to expand with hundreds of new appartments this year, it is crazy that we are exposed to this additional risk, only to avoid trucks in the tunnel. What is Melbourne council doing about this, nothing. We as residents need to raise the matter. If you wish to join an action group, please let me know.

Open Talk - Zero Tolerance and Mandatory Sentencing

One of the main reasons we have a spiralling violence, vandalism and graffiti is that we continue to tolerate it. A slap on the wrist is not going to deter this antisocial behaviour. This has been proven time and again in many other cities. New York was very successful in changing from a disaster to a much safer city with a very tough policy. It can work for Melbourne too, but we must stop the problem now. There are laws, the courts make a mockery of them by never imposing the maximum penalty in most cases they do not even apply the medium possible. We cannot feel sorry for hooligans and violent drunken vandals any longer. If they dont like the strict enforcement, tough luck. Go and be antisocial somewhere else. We need our city back, we residents need to feel safe again. I am opening a petition of residents asking for Zero Tolerance and Mandatory Sentencing are you with me?

Best parks in Melbourne - Fitzroy Gardens

The best Garden in Melbourne has to be the Fitzroy Gardens, I know the drought and Council cut backs have over the years, lowered the appearance of this garden. A long history with features like the Conservatory, Cooks Cottage, Tudor Village, Fairies Tree etc, make this garden an important part of Melbourne. The amount of local, interstate and overseas visitors to these gardens is outstanding. Go there any day of the week to see the amount of people enjoying this garden. I see Council has been spending money on renewing infrasture but the horticultural side of the garden has declined over the years. A garden is more than new paths, rubbish bins etc. I know engineers like to build!!! What about Gardeners who like to grow??

Open Talk - Use of Wide Pedestrian footpaths for Cyclists

Don't understand why wide pedestrian footpaths such on both sides of Royal Parade and the East side Elizabeth St between Grattan St and Victoria St can't accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. How hard is it to just paint a line so that cyclists could travel in a demarcated area on the footpath and replace all the environmentally unfriendly no cycling signs with cycling signs?
The current situation of cycling along Elizabeth St, behind potentially reversing parked cars amidst heavy traffic is dangerous. The roundabout area is a known blackspot for cyclists.
Royal Parade is heavily used by cyclists and for ease of commute to places like the Medical Precinct (RMH, RWH), both sides of the road should be able to accommodate bidirectional cyclist traffic. This would be possible if footpaths are used.

Open Talk - Melbourne being real about bicycle safety

I commute every day by bicycle and am appauled by the lask of duty of care cyclists recieve in the planning and care of roads for cyclists.
I ride via Footscray Rd into Swanston St. Not a single east-west street in the city has a continuous and safe bicycle lane for me to enter/exit the city, they are all intermittent or shared with parked cars.
With the new Costco, the cyclist has to give way to shoppers in petrol guzzling CO2 producing vehicles whilst every other vehicle proceeding straight does not. There's been no attempt to make cyclist safe with any 'Give Way' warnings for cars.
It seems that the rules change for cyclists depending on the whims of the road planning teams.. no concious efforts to keep cyclists moving and safe, sometimes we have to follow ped lights, sometime car TCS.
If Melbourne were true at making it green, they would consult cyclists on road design, keeping us flowing, safe from heavy traffic, slighly separated from peds (communiting cyclists travel 20-40km per hour). The better we are catered for, the less traffic congestion / public transport congestion / Co2 is produced.
We should look to Berlin for their inspiration, as they have excellent shared conditions for all road users and is a true green city.

Open Talk - Hands on stuff - Futurecanvas

Hi guys,
I was hoping to pass on a message to anyone who might be interested in helping build a forrest at the docklands. At the moment I am volunteering for an organisation called futurecanvas http://www.futurecanvas.org/ who as part of their space in the docklands are starting up a reforestation project http://futurecanvas-reforestation.blogspot.com/, which is all about creatvity, community and urban agriculture. We are in the prototypical stages, so no food forrest as of yet. But we are currently having meetings every Thursday night at 6.30 at Shed 4 in the docklands. It would be fantastic if you could come along or spread the word that on the 17th of May we are having a bit of a hands on working bee day and need hands on deck.
The Space & Garden Blitz at Future Canvas HQ is a full-day of activities, music, art, learning and sharing aimed at bringing people from diverse backgrounds together to connect, share and design ways to live sustainably everyday. The day will result in the creation of the initial stage of the creative hub for sustainability thinkers in Melbourne and an urban community garden based at Future Canvas HQ. Overtime this hub will become a nucleus for sustainable thought, art and change in Melbourne and internationally.

Hi Glen completely agree. Just back from a dinner and it was the main subject. The one bright side is the brilliant way we as a community along with our national and global neighbours have got behind the cause to help in any way they can regardless of the fact that we are all right now in the midst of possibly the worst global financial meltdown. It is a great positive sign for us all to take heart.

Open Talk - Melbourne's Heatwave

I heard on the news that another heatwave is due to hit Melbourne over the weekend - so when did the first one end?? So question is where do head in the City to 'chill out' apart from the shopping centres. I reckon Docklands should incorporate the water they sit on into some sort of 'wet & wild' theme park. Otherwise I guess we'll just have to head off to Kerford Rd beach.....
